Play
of the Week 4 - 9/16/2002
Situation:
A is
leading by two points with five seconds remaining in the
game. B1 is fouled by A1 in the act of shooting. B1 misses
the first free throw. B1 is instructed by his coach to miss
the second free throw. B1 throws the second attempt like
a baseball, grazing the ring and bouncing off the backboard.
The ball rebounds back to B1 who is standing at the free
throw line. B1 dribbles behind the three point line and
attempts a three point try for a field goal. The three point
try is good as the horn sounds.

Play
of the Week 5 - 9/23/2002
Situation:
The
officials administer the jump ball with players A1 and B1
facing the correct direction. After the jump ball, A2 takes
the ball, heads the wrong direction, and puts the ball in
B's basket. B3 takes the ball out of bounds (thinking A2
scored a goal) and makes a throw in. Team A regains possession
and then A3 scored in B's basket. At that time the officials
were informed the teams were going the wrong direction.

Play
of the Week 6 - 9/30/2002
Situation:
A1 is
moving parallel to the baseline and dunks the ball. The
ball is below the rim but not out of the net when A1's momentum
carries him into the net where his head hits the ball causing
the ball to come out the top of the rim.

Play
of the Week 7 - 10/7/2002
Situation:
Player
A1 is dribbling in the front court, when he leaves the ball
and falls out of bounds. The ball is still in-bounds before
anyone in-bounds has a chance to get the ball. Player A1
gets up, goes in-bounds with both feet and continues to
dribble again. Click

Play
of the Week 9 - 10/28/2002
Situation:
A1 changes
jerseys at halftime because of blood on the uniform. The
officials do not direct the change or know about the change

Play Rulings
Ruling: Play of the Week 1 - 8/19/2002
Situation:
NFHS, 2-11-11, Penalty NFHS
interpretation.
If this
occurs, a direct technical may be charged to coach for unsportsmanlike
conduct. You would start the third quarter with the free
throws and then the throw-in.

Ruling: Play of the Week 2 - 9/2/2002
Situation:
NFHS 5-8-4, 5-11-3, 10-1-7 Penalty
This
is a team technical that results in two free throws plus
the ball at the division line, opposite the scorer's table.
In addition, a team foul is added to the offending team's
total toward the bonus.

Ruling: Play of the Week 3 - 9/9/2002
Situation:
NFHS 5-6-1, 5-6-3
Rule
5 clearly states that a period ends when the horn sounds
indicating that time has expired, except if a ball is in
flight during a try or a tap. The period ended when the
try was unsuccessful or when the ball lodged between the
ring and the backboard. The kicker in this situation is
that no penalty or part of a penalty may be carried over
to another period, or extra period. So you just start the
next period with the alternating possession procedure, or
if it's and extra period, a jump ball.

Ruling: Play of the Week 4 - 9/16/2002
Situation:
NFHS
4-40-2
There
are no restrictions as to how the ball has to be thrown;
i.e. one or two handed, underhand or overhand. In spite
of the player's intention to miss the try, it is not illegal.
Just make sure the ball hits the ring. In this case the
game is over with the B team winning by one point.

Ruling: Play of the Week 5 - 9/23/2002
Situation:
NFHS 5-2-1, Case book
5.2.3
Since
the teams were lined up properly to start the game (jump
Ball) A2 and A3 each scored two points for team B and the
score is B4 - A0. After A3's goal and the "light" has been
turned on for the officials, the teams are pointed in the
proper direction and play is resumed by a non-designated
spot throw-in by A on B's endline.

Ruling: Play of the Week 6 - 9/30/2002
Situation:
NFHS 5-1-1, 9-11-1
Basket
Interference by A1. No points are scored and Team B gets
a designated throw-in at the closest out-of-bounds spot.
Since A1 touched the ball with his/her head while the ball
was still in the basket, it's a violation. Remember that
touching isn't done exclusively by the hands and arms.

Ruling: Play of the Week 7 - 10/7/2002
Situation:
NFHS 9-3 NOTE
This
is spelled out in the NFHS Rule book as a Note in Rule 9,
Section 3 Out of Bounds. The dribbler has committed a violation
if he/she steps on or outside a boundary, even though he/she
is not touching the ball while out of bounds.

Ruling: Play of the Week 8 - 10/21/2002
Situation:
NFHS 4-40-5, 6-7-7, 5-1-1
Since
B1's head contact was neither a try nor a tap, the ball
became dead as soon as A2 fouled B1. Accordingly, the score
does not count due to the foul.

Ruling: Play of the Week 9 - 10/28/2002
Situation:
NFHS 10-1-2c,
Case Book 3.3.5B
The
spirit and intent of the rule is to do everything possible
for a player to use a different shirt in these cases and
return without penalty. Accordingly, if this change was
properly reported to the scorekeeper, there would be no
penalty even if the officials were not aware of the change.
On the other hand, if it was not reported at all, it would
result in a technical foul when recognized.

Ruling: Play of the Week 10 - 11/11/2002
Situation:
NFHS 5-2-1, Case Book 5.2.1C
A2 costs
A1 a three point goal for it now becomes a two point goal
and A2 gets the credit. B1's touching has a different result
and A1 gets the three points. A2's touching ended A1's try
but since the ball remained live it counts two for A2's
last touching. On the other hand , B1's touching didn't
end A1's try, so it's a three.
